A grievance redressal meeting in Thirunelveli collectorate turned a berserk event when a family of four  set themselves ablaze including their two children.

The reason for the drastic act was reportedly the family’s inability to cope up with the exorbitant rate at which they had received money from a lender. The family had come to the collectorate to submit a petition on the same to the collector.

The four family members sustained injuries and are recently undergoing treatment at the Thirunelveli Medical College Hospital. Esakkimuthu the family head, embarrassed out of not being able to pay an unjustified outstanding due of 2 lakhs to his loaner has taken this decision.

District collector Sandeep Nanduri visited the family members and have promised to set up a special team to investigate cases of usury.
