The Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has announced the state government is looking to make HIV tests compulsory for couples before they register their marriage. A legislation will be put in place for the same. Rane said: “The plan is to make the HIV test mandatory for couples before registration of marriage in Goa.”

The Goa law department is examining the proposal. Rane added: “Once the legislation is cleared by the law department, we can introduce it in the state Assembly during the upcoming monsoon session.” In 2006, a similar proposition was met with opposition. The times have changed however and it is possible that the result may be different now.
