One of the biggest pan Indian blockbusters in Tamil is Kamal Haasan's 'Indian' directed by Shankar which released in the year 1996. The film had the Ulaganayagan in dual roles as a freedom fighter and his son with Manisha Koirala and Urmila Matondkar as the leading ladies.

In 2018 after 22 years the sequel to the film 'Indian 2' was announced with Lyca Productions bankrolling and filming started. Unfortunately due to various reasons including a make up glitch that affected Kamal and the crane accident that killed three crew members and the covid 19 pandemic caused huge delays.

Creative differences then erupted between Shankar and Lyca and the latter went to court seeking a ban on the former from directing other movies before completing 'Indian 2'. After almost a year now a compromise has been arrived at and the court has closed the case.

Retired judge Banumati has been appointed as arbitrator and talks have now reportedly on a positive track. It is said that Kamal too is keen on completing the project and has let it be known that his dates are free from December 15th onwards.

Latest reports suggest that 'Indian 2' will surely resume from the mid of next month and will go on for atleast a hundred days. Fifty percent of the screenplay is already canned and the rest will be done in one go and wrapped up by mid 2022. There are a few things that have to be worked out as two stars Vivek and Nedumudi Venu who had important roles in 'Indian 2' passed away. It is unknown as of now if they will be replaced by other actors or ends to their characters will be written in.

'Indian 2' has music by Anirudh and stars Kamal Haasan, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Rakul Preet Singh, Kajal Agarwal, Bobby Simha, Siddharth and Samuthirakani.
