At 16.25 crore, South African all-rounder Chris Morris has become the most expensive buy in IPL auction history, breaking the record of Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who was bought for 16 crore by Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in 2015.

After a long bidding war with Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals ended up buying the South African all-rounder, whose base price was Rs. 75 lakh. Chris Morris has played 70 IPL matches for 80 wickets at an economy of 7.81, apart from securing 551 runs at a strike rate above 157. The all-rounder was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2020, the same year he was bought by the team for Rs. 10 crore. Previously, the most expensive overseas buy was Pat Cummins, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2020 for Rs. 15.5 crore. English cricketer Dawid Malan is currently sold to Kings XI Punjab for his opening bid of Rs. 1.5 crore.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali and Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who had base prices of Rs. 2 crore each, were bought by Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 7 crore and Rs. 14.25 crore, respectively. Meanwhile, Australian batsman Steve Smith, who was released by Rajasthan Royals, was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs. 2.20 crore, Rs. 20 lakh more than his base price. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 3.2 crore, while Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube went to Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 4.4 crore. Following an intense bidding war with Delhi Capitals, Piyush Chawla was bought for Rs 2.4 crore by Mumbai Indians.
