Expectations

Producer-Director Karan Johar is known for making entertaining films catering to all sorts of audiences right from the rural parts of India to the NRI's in the foreign lands. His films are known for larger than life portrayal of our society and that's what manage to work in the favour of their films. While most of their films belong to romantic genre, there were few catering to the family drama type of audience. The variation of this genre can be seen in terms of films like 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' and 'We Are Family', where one manages to touch the right family nerve of its targeted audience, while others ended up being totally opposite. Their latest offering in this genre is 'Kapoor & Sons', which also reminds us of Hollywood film 'Sabrina'. The expectation level are high due to association of young heart throbs like Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra along with highly popular song 'Chull'.

Story

'Kapoor & Sons' is a story of a 90 year old Amarjeet Kapoor (Rishi Kapoor) staying with his son Harsh Kapoor (Rajat Kapoor) and daughter-in-law Sunita Kapoor (Ratna Pathak Shah). One day Amarjeet Kapoor gets a heart attack due to which Harsh Kapoor summons both his sons Rahul (Fawad Khan) & Arjun (Sidharth Malhotra), who are staying abroad. The family reunites after a long gap and along with the family bonding many other internal issues keep emerging, due to which fights and heated arguments takes place between all of them. Amarjeet Kapoor’s final wish is to have a photo consisting of all his family members and 'Kapoor & Sons' written below it. But quarrels, inner desires, dark secrets and romance come in between Amarjeet's dream and that's what the entire film is all about.

The 'Glitz' Factor

The story which seems to be simple and predictable, has been presented in an interesting manner. There are lots of good moments added in the screenplay due to which one gets totally engaged in the film. The first half consists of good interesting, funny and enjoyable scenes followed by the intense family drama in the second half. Every scene involving Rishi Kapoor, Fawad Khan, Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor are worth a watch. The dialogues are totally realistic and heartfelt. The camera work is good and works in the favour of the film. Speaking about the music only 'Chull' and 'Buddhu Sa Mann' manage to do justice to the film. Director Shakun Batra manages to bring back the lost genre of family drama and majorly succeeds in touching the sensitive nerve of his audience. He keeps the drama, emotions and romantic track intact with his style of film-making.

Rishi Kapoor is cute and charming. Every scene of his enhances the viewing experience. Fawad Khan is intense and totally perfect for his character. Sidharth Malhotra lends good support. Alia Bhatt is lovable in her parts. Rajat Kapoor is soulful. Ratna Pathak Shah is marvelous. Together Rajat and Ratna acts like the main pillars of the film.

The 'Non-Glitz' Factor

The only major flaw out here is the slow narration and a dragged finale part. These minor points dilutes the intensity of this film. The fights and arguments seems repetitive after a while and the fun part gets diluted in the finale of the film.If only the pace would have been a bit better, especially in the final part, the impact would have been doubled. There should have been more enjoyable songs, especially in the second half of the film. Sidharth Malhotra needed better characterization to display his acting skills. One wished to see more of Alia Bhatt in the film.

Final 'Glitz'

'Kapoor & Sons' is a decent, neat and a clean family drama which will be loved and connects with everyone who loves films from this genre. The youngsters might feel a bit let down after the initial part of the film, while others will enjoy this film as it touches the family nerve inside them.
