Director Mari Selvaraj caught the imagination of his peers as well as audiences with his very first film 'Pariyerum Perumal' produced by Pa. Ranjith that dealt with the pains of the underpreviliged classes. His stock then rose sky high after the critical and commercial success of 'Karnan', his sophomore project starring Dhanush, Natty Natraj and Yogi Babu among others.

Mari Selvaraj is currently directing 'Maamannan' that has music by A.R. Rahman and stars Udhayanidhi Stalin, Fahadh Faasil, Keerthy Suresh and Vadivelu in the lead roles. Meanwhile before the completion of this film the ace filmmaker has branched into film production starting a new banner Navvi Studios.

The first film under Navvi Studios is titled 'Vaazhai' and stars Kalaiyarasan and Nikhila Vimal in the lead roles. The film has music by Santhosh Narayanan and the first look shows a bunch of boys in a rural background suggesting that its a coming of age tale. Divya Mari Selvaraj is the coproducer while Disney Plus Hotstar is jointly producing.
