'Nuvvu Thopu Raa', starring Sudhakar Komakula in the lead, hit the screens this Friday.  Here is our review of the entertainer.

Story:

Suri (Sudhakar Komakula) is a dullard at studies.  At home, he doesn't get along well with his mother (Nirosha), as he thinks that she cares for his sister more.  The spoilt son even quits his Engineering mid-way.

Ramya (Nithya Shetty) entices him to a life in the US but their love story comes to a standstill.

Suri somehow reaches the US with new dreams.  But once in the foreign land, he faces unlikely situations and bumps into characters who may not be what they seem to be.

How does he make it in the country?  Will he patch-up with his mother, whom he has always mistaken?  Can he win back his love?  Answers to these questions are found in the second half.

Analysis:

A film starring unfamiliar faces should desist from over-indulging anything.  Director D Harinath Babu does exactly what he shouldn't have.  Just take the run-time into consideration.  The first half needn't have been so lengthy.  Same goes with the scenes that follow the neatly-written segments.  Couldn't the writing department have maintained consistency?  With better quality control, and an ability to avoid temptations and low-hanging fruits, they could have done that.

Some of the situations that Suri faces in the US are familiar.  They smack of predictability.  The scenes play out perfunctorily after a point.

It seems the climax was hurried through for reasons best known to the makers.  Some moments might have been edited out at the Edit table due to last minute decisions.

The rom-com scenes lack the zing.  The hero-heroine duo struggles to strike the right chemistry.  The dialogues work here and there and that's all can be said about the portions.

Had the interval block and the climax been handled well, it would have been a face-saver.  Not that it would have been a saving grace, for the film is beyond redemption at so many places.

The story-telling boasts positives in terms of Sudhakar's earnest dialogue-delivery.  The hero, born and brought up in Vizag, gets into the skin of a character that speaks in the Hyderabadi slang.  The character's equations with his mother should have been explored in a bigger way.  Despite the limitations of the segment, Nirosha's performance is nearly flawless.

Given the 'dappu' backdrop, the local culture gets explored thoroughly in some scenes.  A few interesting sub-plots would have made it all the more alluring.  It would have also helped to unflesh the hero's scenes with his friends.

Suresh Bobbili's music passes muster.  Prakash Velayudhan, and Venkat C Dilip give able cinematography.

Verdict:

'Nuvvu Thopu Raa' comes with a decent storyline.  However, it gets blighted by a weak directorial vision.  Many scenes lack substance.  Ordinary scenes could have been uplifted by incisive dialogue and greater intensity.
