The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has declared that the 93rd Academy Awards have been postponed by 8 weeks. The new date is 25 April 2021.

This is the fourth time that Oscars have been postponed in the history of the most prestigious awards. The postponement is obviously in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic upsetting the release schedule of movies.

"The eligibility window has been extended until 28 February 2021 for feature films," an official statement says. "The purpose of this is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control,” the statement added.

Here are the three occasions on which Oscars were rescheduled in history:

1. Due to flooding in Los Angeles in 1938, Oscars were deferred by a week.

2. Martin Luther King Jr's assassination in 1968 caused a two-day delay.

3. President Ronald Reagan's assassination in 1981 caused a short delay.

But the biggest postponement is of this time.
