Director S P Jananathan proved his mettle as a filmmaker who can do different movies within commercial parameters with 'Iyarkai' and 'E'. He seems to strike a hat-trick with 'Pernamai'.

It is a film that is different from the regular rhythm pattern of Tamil cinema. It has action, humour, punch dialogues and loads of heroism but all presented in a different mix that touches both our heart and brain. Ayngaran International should be complimented for taking guts to produce such a film that is strikingly different.

Jananathan speaks about the condition of tribes in our country even after 62 years of independence. Their agony and frustration are brought out in a realistic manner.

The movie revolves around Dhuruvan (Jayam Ravi), who knows everything and anything about the forest. His travails while taking a bunch of college girls on a trekking to a jungle makes up the movie. Dhansika, Maha, Liasri, Saranya and Vasundhara are the batch of girls.

The movie begins with the group of arrogant girls selected for trekking inside a forest as part of the NCC camp with Dhuruvan, who is a first generation graduate and a government employee from a tribal family. His superior Ganapathiram (Ponvannan), a forest ranger, often ridicules him and insults him referring to his community. Once Dhuruvan along with girls enter forest, everything changes.

They get struck inside the jungle and come across a group of foreign ultras who come to hamper India's mission to launch a satellite in the orbit. The terrorists led by Anderson (Roland Kickenger) plans to take a strategic location in the forest and strike the satellite with a missile.

Coming to know of their intensions, Dhuruvan along with the girls go hammer and tongs and hamper all their plans. They gel as a unit to put an end to the terrorists.

Hogging all limelight is Jeyam Ravi. The actor who has been seen so far a chocolate-boy in Tamil cinema plays a daredevil forest officer. He is at his best in stunt sequence. While in the first half, he is portrayed as a calm and composed youth, he lets loose himself in the second half taking on the foreign mercenaries.

Credit should go to all the five girls, Vasundhara and Dhanishka are impressive among the lot. Ponvannan as a greedy officer does a neat job . Vadivelu and Oorvasi are also in the cast.

Roland Kickenger fits the role to the T. He is cool and casual even in stunt sequences. Vidyasagar's background score is appealing. All credit should go to the director for choosing location, which forms a major part of the script. Sathish Kumar's camera has captured the pulsating stunt sequences at its best.

On the whole, Peranmai is a movie that lives up to its name - masculine and mighty. All credit to Jananathan for weaving a movie is engrossing and enthralling.

Peranmai - Macho man
