Film director and founder of Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam Seeman was on Friday released from the Vellore Central Prison, following the Madras High Court quashing his detention under the National Security Act.

A rousing reception was given to the Tamil activist, who was in prison for five months, by volunteers of his organisation. “I will file a case against government for detaining me in prison and preventing from taking up works,” he told reporters.

Accusing the DMK government of foisting this case, with the sole aim of imprisoning him, Seeman said the police was well aware that it was not a fit case for detaining him under NSA, but still they went ahead as per the directives of the higher authorities.

On Thursday, a division bench comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and D Hariparanthaman set aside the order of the Additional Commissioner of Police dated July 16, 2010, detaining Seeman for allegedly inciting people to attack Sinhalese students in Chennai while condemning the Sri Lankan forces attack on Indian fishermen.
