Simply Energetic and Perky
Wednesday, May 23, 2012 • Hindi Comments

After `Dev D' and `Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye', director Dibakar Banerjee once again establishes himself this time with a political satire `Shanghai'. The film is supported by an energetic and peppy album by Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani. Here the music not only adds cinematic value but takes the narrative further.

Music: Vishal and Shekhar
Lyrics: Dibakar Banerjee, Anvita Dutt, Kumaar, Vishal Dadlani, Neelesh Misra

Bharat Mata Ki Jai: Listen here
Singers: Keerti Sagathia and Vishal Dadlani
Lyrics:  Dibakar Banerjee

The album opens with an energetic and peppy street dance number "Bharat Mata Ki Jai", which can be termed as a modern day national anthem. This loud boisterous track starts on a high note by Keerti Sagathia and Vishal Dadlani and takes a satirical dig on the politicians who have made tall claims. The song is peppered by strong dhol, drum beats, horns, trumpets and whistles lending it a very street feel and tapori number. Penned by Dibakar with lines like `sone ki chidiya, dengue malaria' gives it a very street feel.  Overall a very enjoyable number this one will be top of the charts.

A remixed version by Kiran Kamath once again rendered by Keerthi Sagathia and Vishal Dadlani is a strong energetic number with lots of beats.

Imported Kamariya: Listen here
Singer: Richa Sharma.
Additional Vocals: Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt

"Bharat Mata Ki Jai" is followed by an Item number "Imported Kamariya" by Richa Sharma. As the songs suggest the song is choreographed on British model Scarlet Mellish Wilson. It has a strong up style nautanki number which is popular at most of the political rallies held in the northern part of India. Richa Sharma's deep husky tone compliments the mood of the dance number. Lot of beats and accompanied by the harmonium, Indian instruments peppered with whistles complete this item number. Additional vocals by Vishal-Shekhar only add to the song. Another sure winner by the musical duo.

Duaa: Listen here
Singers: Nandini Srikar and Arijit Singh
Additional Vocals: Shekhar Ravjiani
Lyrics: Kumaar

After two peppy numbers, "Duaa" comes as a soft subtle number. Both Nandini Srikar and Arijit Singh's voices compliment each other and are well balanced with the strumming of the guitar in the background. Additional vocals by Shekhar simply blends in with their voices. This thought provoking number will stay in the listeners mind for a long time.

Khudaaya: Listen here
Singer: Shekhar Ravjiana
Additional Vocals: Raja Hasan'
Lyrics: Neelesh Misra

"Khudaaya" is a traditionally composed number sung in a qawwali style. Shekhar Ravjiani along with Raja Hasan sing the soft oriented track in soft tones accompanied by drums, the piano and the guitar, giving it a soft rock feel. Raja Hasan goes off into a high pitched performance adding to the soft tones giving it a trance feel. An impressive song by Shekhar.

Remix by Shekhar is the soft electro feel but the original track is more impressive.

Morcha: Listen here
Singer: Raja Hasan
Additional Vocals: Vishal Dadlani
Lyrics: Vishal Dadlani

It's a typical Morcha kind of song with a blend of dhols, manjeeras and nagadas added  to Raja Hasan's  deep throated voice   and accompanied by Vishal's additional vocals. It is a typical political party manifesto musical piece with a characteristic Maharastrian folk base. This is one song which adds to the background of this political satire.

Vishnu Sahasranamam: Listen here
Singer: Srivatsa Krishna

Vishnu Sahasranama mantra by Srivasta Krishna is a sacred chant that reveals the one thousand names of Lord Vishnu. Srivatsa Krishna's refine voice and great diction epitomizes the powers and strength of the mighty Lord Vishnu. This devotional number is a great piece of musical work and soothes your nerves. It will be a hot favourite amongst those who love listening to such mantras.

Overall: The album is a unique attempt by Vishal & Shekhar. "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and "Imported Kamariya" are likely to be hot favorites among masses while "Duaa", "Khudayaa" and Mantra "Vishnu Sahasranama" will have select listeners.
