In the 92 years history of the National Spelling Bee contest, for the first time eight kids tied to win the title, which was quite unexpected. Held for close to a tiring 3 and a half hours, kids between the age of 12 to 14 turned spellers tried their hands in the challenges thrown at them as they took on the contest of tracing letters on palms and also finding the foreign language roots.

On the fourth day of the National spelling bee contest, there were a total of 562 spellers from 50 states, and from the huge list of contestants, sixteen kids were able to reach the final stage which was at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center located in Maryland, and it was also observed that most of these kids also had previous experience of contesting in earlier editions of spelling bee.

20 rounds later eight spellers were left and they all were together announced as the co-champions as spelling bee officials declared that they are out of words. The eight winners of the National Spelling bee contest are Rishik Gandhasri, Erin Howard, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Christopher Serrao, and Rohan Raja of whom 7 are of Indian origin. The title winning champion of the spelling bee contest will receive a cash price of $50,000, besides reference books and a savings bond worth $2,500.
