Director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, a legendary figure in the film industry at the age of 92, recently exercised his right to vote from home, taking advantage of a unique opportunity presented by the Central Election Commission. This initiative, introduced during the general elections, allows individuals over the age of 85 to cast their votes from the comfort of their residences. The aim of this innovative approach is to facilitate the voting process for elderly citizens, ensuring their active participation in the electoral process while prioritizing their convenience and well-being.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the introduction of the vote-from-home option for citizens aged 85 and above, as well as for persons with disabilities, during the Lok Sabha polls beginning April 19. This initiative recognizes the desire of senior citizens to participate in the electoral process while providing them with the option to vote from their homes, ensuring their safety and comfort.

The voting for Lok Sabha Polls 2024 will be conducted in seven phases across the country, with the last phase scheduled for June 1. The results of the polls will be declared on June 4, according to Kumar.

To avail of the vote-from-home option, senior citizens above 85 years and persons with more than 40% disability must file Form 12 D with the Election Commission within five days of the release of the poll notification. The Union Law Ministry amended the Conduct of Elections Rules-1961 to change the eligibility criteria for choosing the postal ballot facility from "above 80 years" to "above 85 years."

As of March 10, 2024, there are 81,87,999 senior citizen electors above 85 years and 2,18,442 electors above 100 years in the country, according to the election commission. This initiative is expected to enhance the inclusivity of the electoral process, ensuring that every eligible citizen can participate in shaping the nation's future.
