Telugu Audiences Turn Away from Political Dramas: Are Films Missing the Mark?

The recent release of the political drama 'Prathinidi,' featuring Nara Rohith, failed to ignite the box office, suggesting a reluctance among Telugu audiences toward political themes. This trend is reflected in earlier films like 'Yatra 2' and 'Vyooham,' which depicted the life story of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy but failed to impress viewers. Similarly, 'Rajadhani Files,' which portrayed Y S Jagan's decision to announce three capitals in a negative light, also met with a similar fate in Andhra Pradesh.

Political films centered around top politicians are not new to Tollywood, with many such films made in the past. According to renowned writer Gopi Mohan, these films can find success if handled by the right directors who can bring legitimacy and connect with audiences. However, if not executed well, attracting crowds can be challenging.

Even 'Yatra 2,' an official biopic of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy showcasing his popular padayatra and political journey, failed to make an impact at the box office. Gopi Mohan believes that a political film, when made without bias and with a proper balance, can be engaging. He suggests that such films should touch upon unique issues not previously in the public domain to pique the interest of party cadres and general audiences alike.

Discussing the challenges of making biopics on political leaders, Gopi Mohan emphasizes the need for 'dramatic elements' to engage cinema audiences. He cites the Hollywood film 'Gandhi' as a great example of a truthful and unbiased portrayal of a legendary figure, highlighting both his strengths and vulnerabilities. Similarly, he praises the Telugu film 'Mahanati' for its comprehensive depiction of Savitri's life, which garnered widespread acclaim.

In conclusion, Gopi Mohan believes that political films can be successful if they maintain objectivity and avoid bias, presenting a balanced and engaging narrative that appeals to both political enthusiasts and general moviegoers.
