A class 12 student from Coimbatore committed suicide on Thursday, November 11. The 17-year-old girl is said to have hanged herself at her home in Coimbatore's RS Puram locality when her parents were out. She was found by her father and a close friend. An alleged suicide note was found in the girl's room, in which three people were named.

The girl's parents alleged that she had complained of being sexually harassed by a teacher at her private school. The teacher has been identified as Mithun Chakkaravarthi who had taken physics in Chinmaya Vidyalaya Matriculation School at PM Samy Colony in RS Puram. Her father says that the girl had complained against the staff but no action was taken by the principal.

Now, actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan has voiced out against the offenders in the issue. He made a tweet in Tamil which roughly translates to, "The incident where a school student committed suicide due to sexual harassment in Coimbatore is shocking. Those responsible for his death must be punished. Tamil Nadu should put an end to the misery of the fence grazing the crops."

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and arrested the school teacher on Friday evening. The RS Puram All Women’s Police Station (AWPS) has booked him under IPC 306 (abetment of suicide) and Section 9 (L) (whoever commits sexual assault on the child more than once or repeatedly) read with 10 (punishment for aggravated sexual assault) of the POCSO Act.
