மும்மூர்த்திகள் உருவான கதை | Navaratri Day 4 - Kushmanda | நவராத்திரி உருவான வரலாறு | Tamil Stories

Kushmanda, also known as the smiling Goddess, is worshipped by devotees on the fourth day of Navaratri. Her name is made up of three syllables, each of which is derived from a word. While 'Ku' means 'little', 'Ushma' means 'warmth', and 'anda' refers to egg. In other words, Kushmanda is the creator of this 'little cosmic egg' or the Universe.

Certainly! Kushmanda is the fourth form of Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the fourth day of Navaratri. Here's a detailed description of Goddess Kushmanda:

Kushmanda - The Fourth Form of Goddess Durga**

1. Name Origin: The name 'Kushmanda' is derived from three words — 'Ku' (a little), 'Ushma' (warmth or energy), and 'Anda' (egg). Thus, she is believed to be the creator of the universe, which she formed from a tiny cosmic egg.

2. Appearance: Goddess Kushmanda is often depicted as having eight arms (Ashtabhuja) and holds various powerful objects in her hands. These often include a kamandal (water pot), bow, arrow, lotus, jar of nectar, discus, mace, and a chakra. She rides a lion, representing her regal and fearless nature.

3. Creation of the Universe: It's believed that when there was darkness everywhere, and there was no existence of the universe, it was Goddess Kushmanda who smiled, and her smile led to the manifestation of the universe.

4. Solar Deity: She is also associated with the sun, with the belief that she has the power and capability to live inside the core of the sun. Her luminosity gives the sun its brightness. Hence, she is also known as 'Aditya Mandal Vasini' — one who resides in the sun.

5. Worship: Worshipping Goddess Kushmanda is said to improve health and bestow wealth and strength upon the devotee. Devotees believe that by offering their devotion to her, she can eliminate all their troubles and ailments.

6. Mantra: One of the commonly recited mantras for Kushmanda is:

Sura Sampurna Kalasham Rudhira Plutamev Cha |
Dadhana Hastapadmabhyam Kushmanda Shubhadastu Me ||

Translation: "The goddess who holds two pitchers full of blood and has a universe inside her. May Kushmanda Devi bless me with good fortune and well-being."

The significance of Goddess Kushmanda in Navaratri celebrations underscores the importance of creation and the beginning of life.
