The Sathyaraj starrer Azhagesan is a remake of Malayalam film Karumadikuttan. The Tamil producers went ahead with the shooting without getting the remake rights of the film from the Malayalam director Vinayan. Vinayan had remade his earlier Malayalam hit Vasanthi Laxmi Pinnayum Naanum as Kaasi in Tamil. The Tamil producers who would have got the rights for less than Rs 5 lakhs has now to cough up Rs 15 lakhs to the director. The irony of the episode is that Vinayan had reworked on the chapani character enacted by Kamalhassan in 16 Vaithinilay and made it into Karumadikuttan.
