Jeyam Ravi's recently released Nimirndhu directed by Samuthirakani features the tall and handsome actor in a double role for the second time after Ameer's Aadhi Bhagavan that released in 2013. In Nimirndhu Nil Jeyam Ravi acts as an upright youngster spearheading a campaign to eradicate corruption and the other character played by him enters only in the second half and ends with a twist. The age difference between the two roles played by Ravi in this film was also much publicized before the film's release. While Jeyam Ravi's performance as a socially conscious Aravind Sivaswami is being appreciated by fans and critics alike, the other character Narasimha Reddy which had shades of negativity has gained mixed reviews
We feel this is the apt time to recall some of the dual role flicks of Tamil cinema's top heroes who have shown utmost difference whenever they play more than one character in a film.
Moondru Mugam - Rajnikanth
Our most beloved Superstar who entered the film industry in 1975, acted in his first dual role film Billa that released in 1980. The film was a blockbuster. In the same year he acted in a couple of dual role films like Johny directed by Mahendran and S.P.Muthuraman's Netrikkan (1981) It won't be a overstatement to say that Rajni differentiated the two roles he played in each of these films in as many means as possible and the success of these films vouch for that .
In 1982 came Moondru Mugam in which the star acted in tiple role for the first time. The super star made the upright Police officer Alex Pandian character one of the most memorable in his illustrious career with that Kakhie uniform, thick side burns, broad mustache, commanding voice, walk expressing abundant confidence in a role which is just like an extended cameo. Rajni also acted as Arun and John the two sons of Alex Pandian. While Arun was a well bread youngster who was lucky enough to be adopted by rich parents John was a relatively less educated man nurtured by a relatively impoverished family. Rajni portrayed these two distinct characters convincinglyl.
There were many more dual role films in which Superstar had acted and his upcoming film Kochadiiyaan reportedly features him in three roles.
Aalvandhan - Kamalhassan
Like his good friend Rajni Kamal has also acted in many dual roles films. He holds the record for acting in 10 different roles in Dasavatharam that released in 2008. All the 10 roles were entirely different from one another in looks, background and even age. The actor known for his dedication spent more than 10 hours in make-up room during the shoot of this magnum opus film which turned out to be a blockbuster.
As early as 2001 Kamal acted in the film Aalvanadhan as an army officer and a psychopath killer out to kill his brother's wife. He differentiated by acting in a completely positive character and a man affected by ill treatment meted out by his step mother. The film released during the time when it was quite uncommon for an actor to reduce or put up his body weight for the sake of the roles he plays in a film. But Kamal maintained 8 kilograms of body weight difference between the two characters he played in the film.
Vaali - Ajith
Ajith is another actor who is considered an expert in playing dual roles and has taken up the challenge in many films. It was debutant director S.J.Sruya who imagined the actor known for his smart looks in a positive as well as negative character and made him act in dual roles for the first time in Vaali that released in 1999.
As a speech and hearing impaired but lustful Deva and an affectionate and ever trusting younger brother Siva Ajith really did redefine his career with the film. The film not only paved way for a slew of dual role films from the star to follow but also unearthed the actor's skill as well as the rare courage for acting in characters with negative shades.
Varalaru directed by K.S.Ravikumar is the first triple role film of Ajith. Ajith excelled in this film as a self confined Bharathnatyam dancer, his innocent and vulnerable son and his another son who is around to seek revenge. The film's success breathed a fresh air in the actor's career hampered by continuous box office flops during the time it released.
Ajith won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for Vaali and his third for Varalaru.
Azhagiya Tamilmagan - Vijay
Actor Vijay who has been ruling the box office for more than two decades now has not acted in many dual role films unlike his competitor AJith. Out of the 56 films he has acted so far only two films Azhagiya Tamil Magan and Villu had him playing dual roles.
Like Ajith, Vijay also experimented with the good man-baddie combo in his first dual role film Azhagiya Tamil Magan. The actor proved his ability to differentiate between both the characters, by bringing in a different voice modulation and mannerisms for the villainy role he played in the film. However the film did not click at the box office.
The 57th film of VIjay directed by A.R.Murugdoss which is currently in progress reportedly features the star in dual roles. With the duo's track record with a blockbuster in Thuppakki, fans can be assured of a double dhamaka from their Ilayathalabathi this time.
