    Vikram climbs the totem pole

    Sunday, August 15, 2004
It has been a chequered film career so far for actor Vikram. A stuttering start and it took many years for him establish himself in the highly competitive film industry. He was a forgotten actor after a string of disappointments. Yet, the long wait did not go waste for the actor.

One film - Sethu was enough to bring him back into the reckoning. And, he has not looked back since. A series of hits made everyone take notice. The fruits of hard were beginning to bring him rewards. And, the icing on the cake is the national award for best actor for a stirring performance as an undertaker in Pithamagan, directed by Bala.
'I am elated to have been conferred the national award (best actor). It is a great honour not just for the Tamil film industry but for millions of Tamils living all across the globe,' Chiyaan Vikram said while reacting to the announcement.
About his role in the movie, Vikram says, 'all credit should go to director Bala. When he narrated the story, I was so impressed with the script that I decided to give it a try. Playing the role of an undertaker was not an easy task and that as a man who does not communicate with anyone all through the film. Even as the film was being shot, we were confident that the role would click.'
Vikram, who is currently shooting for Shankar's Anniyan, says, 'I had to work hard for my role in Pithamagan. I used discuss with Bala, in a bid to keep on improving. I am delighted to have impressed the audience with my performance.'
'It was my dream to win a national award, which has been realised now. Though everyone expected an award for my performance in Sethu, directed by Bala, a few years ago, it didn't happen. But Bala came up with a stupendous movie again, which has helped me walk away with the honours now,' the actor remarks.'The award has made one thing clear for me - it is that hard work will always be recognised,' Vikram adds.
'Before Pithamagan, I ventured to do an action-packed role as police officer in Saamy. I played an Assistant Commissioner of Police Aarusamy in the movie. Whereas in the next, I donned the role of undertaker Sithan. It was a tough job as I was required to bring out more emotions and act in a controlled manner for the character. Due credit should go to Bala,' Vikram says.
Every actor yearns for recognition. People appreciating an actor's performance on screen is the most cherished possession of every film personality, he says and adds 'I am happy that I have now been recognised as an actor, who can perform different roles well. It's indeed like a stimulant to me,' he says.
Sethu helped me to reach the rural masses in the State, whereas Pithamagan has taken me to all parts of the country, he adds.
