Magesh, Saranya, Matrum Palar - Living up to his reputation
IndiaGlitz  [Tuesday, November 25, 2008]

Utter the name Vidyasagar and one is immediately reminded of several hundred melodies that still stay fresh in our hearts. He is one of the very few music composers, who has a strong liking for Classical ragas. The man of melody, Vidayasagar keeps his reputation intact with 'Magesh Saranya Mattrum Palar'.

Supposedly a musical entertainer, the album has eight numbers and all of them are set with Carnatic ragas. Coupled with good choice of singers and acclaimed lyricists, the songs have come really good from Vidyasagar.

'Magesh Saranya Mattrum Palar', stars Sakthi, Sandhya, Daniel Balaji and Keerthi Chawla in lead roles. Produced by Kool Productions, the movie is directed by P V Ravi

Kaatre Kaatre (Benny Dayal) Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

Known for neat melodies Vidyasagar has tried to weave together a pure Carnatic raga with pop.  A bubbly romantic number, the song strikes our heart immediately especially because of the beautiful usage of the guitar. Benny Dayal is one gifted singer who renders with ease and élan any kind of song. Na Muthukumar's lyrics are simple and easy to follow.

Thajam Thajam (Binny Krishnakumar)

Vidyasagar has opted to go the classical way for the song. Pa Vijay's lyrics remind one of listening to the song 'Idhu Oru Pon Malai Pozhudhu' from the yesteryear film 'Nizhalgal'. The song is about a man's admiration of various things around him. Binny renders the song with the right energy. Vidyasagar's intelligent use of mridangam, violin and flute adds sheen to the number. Pa Vijay has penned the lyrics.

Thanthatthile Seydha (S P Balasubramaniam)

The 'King' is back. S P Balasubramaniam, the man who enthralled music-lovers rendering several thousand songs sings this song with renewed energy and vigor. His diction of the song is a lesson for aspiring and young singers.

It is a song that speaks about family relationship and affection. Vidyasagar seems to have developed a rapport with the guitar composing the album. The combined use of sitar and flute in the interludes mesmerizes the listeners. Jayandha has penned the song.

Vaigarai Paniyae (S P Balasubramaniam)

This is a classical melody from Vidyasagar again. The Vidayasagar and S P Balasubramaniam duo have teamed up before to render several melodious hits. This one should add on to that collection.

The song begins with soft use of Violin and Nadhaswaram, and the perfect rhythm ensues. The thavil in the interlude is energetic. Yugabharathi's lyrics deserve a special mention.

Vizhiyil Vizhiyil (Haricharan, Rita)

After Ilayaraja, Vidyasagar seems to be the only music composer to make good use of the violin. Vizhiyil is a soft song with violins enhancing the pace as it progresses.

It is a romantic song with Haricharan swaying the listeners with his soft voice. Rita catches up with Haricharan well. Well done Pa Vijay for describing the feel of love in this song.

Yaaradhu Yaaradhu (Karthik)

A brisk number being rendered by Karthik with abundant energy. Singing the song in high pitch, Karthik infuses life into the song. Laced with western touch, the song deserves mention for nice instrumentation and rhythmic interludes by Vidyasagar. Again Pa Vijay impresses with his lyrics

En Paadal (Saindavi)

Saindavi is one of the young singers who go about her work with dedication. She renders the song with open throated voice in a quick pace. Rhythm pattern sways well. Trumpets and flutes combine to make a different but a pleasing sound. Yugabharathy has penned the lyrics seemingly understanding the situation well in the movie.

En Uyirukkul (Tippu, Rajalakshmi)

Welcome Tippu, the man with the magnetic voice. In Rajalakshmi's company, he has sung a smooth romantic song penned well by Jayandha. Again the use of violin by Vidayasagar for the song is commendable.

On the whole, the music of 'Magesh Saranya Matturum Palar' is pleasing and good to listen to. Vidyasagar, the man who is comfortable composing melodious numbers, has gone on to prove that the fame for peppy and crude numbers is only temporary. Soft melodies stay fresh forever.
