Yaavarum Nalam - A Spooky Thriller on the Way
IndiaGlitz  [Sunday, February 15, 2009]

Since' Shock', Tamil cinema didn't see a thriller or horror film so far and the genre was considered as not suitable for Tamil audiences. But, in a daring attempt, the latest upcoming flick 'Yaavarum Nalam' starring Madhavan and Neetu Chandra is a thriller set to chill the spines on March 6th.

Presented by Big Pictures, National award winning director Vikram Kumar has directed this bilingual film (Titled as '13B' in Hindi) and Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy composed the musical score in Tamil after 'Aalavandhan'. Cinematography plays a major part when it comes to films of this kind and the responsibility has been entrusted to talented cinematographer P.C. Sreeram.

Unlike the usual horror flicks, 'Yaavarum Nalam' is based on real life incidents which will be believable and let us relate to the characters on screen. For people who think the scary element will be a ghost haunting the family or a serial killer, they are in for a surprise cause the story revolves around the paranormal activities initiated by a .... TV!

The modern technology that came into our lives as a source to gain knowledge and pass time slowly became an addiction, an outlet for burning emotional trauma and a companion when solace is not found in real humans. The real purpose of a television changed with time and now the 'Idiot box' controls us more than we do it - based on this theme the film has been made.

The story begins with Manohar (Madhavan), a civil engineer who moves to a new apartment 13B situated in the 13th floor, along with his wife Priya (Neetu Chandra) to begin a happy life. The couple eagerly looks forward to having a kid of their own and life goes as simple as ever. Priya and her neighbors get addicted to a new soap 'Sab Khairiyat?' (Name yet to be known for Tamil version) and start spending their whole day stuck to the television set. In a spooky twist, the TV realizes it got an upper hand over its viewers and whatever gets relayed in the serial become real life incidents to the family. The profound thinker and practical guy, Manohar finds possible ways to get out of this grave situation they have got into and what happens following the consequences is narrated leading to a spooky and spine chilling end.

The makers have taken a different route this time to thrill the audience. If what they have said is true, the film won't have shrill screams, blood curling moans or gory faces to scare. Instead, it will be filled with silent moments all along raising the anticipation level to a great extent. The movie was shot simultaneously to suit the nativity with an entirely different cast for Tamil and Hindi, excluding Madhavan and Neetu Chandra. Unknown to us, the makers have made the script ready for this film almost three years ago and have done their homework to come out with a neat package in the end.

For the film goers, 'Yaavarum Nalam' will sure be a welcome relief from the clichéd commercial entertainers and Madhavan, who always tries to be innovative in cinema has done it yet again.

Buckle up your seat belts and get ready for a thrilling ride in a few weeks time.
