Internet giant Google has been slapped with a 2.42 billion euros penalty for breaching the antitrust rules of the European Union. Google is alleged to have given unfair and illegal advantage to its comparison shopping service.

While Google maintained that it only tried to improve the shopping experience of users, European regulators – policing the EU competition rules – said that Google projected its shopping service even if there were better deals on other options.

The company has been given 90 days to stop abusing its market dominance or will have to pay a fine equal to 5 percent of the average daily worldwide turnover of Alphabet, the parent company. This is highest a single company will pay as penalty in an anti-competitive practice case in the EU.
