Indian IT exporter Infosys Corporation has agreed to pay $1 million as settlement to the state of New York in a visa violation case in the US.

Whistleblowers had claimed that the Indian company regularly brought IT personnel into New York to perform work under the B-1 visas – easily-obtained temporary visitor visas – and made them do work that can only be done by H-1B visa holders, thus abusing the terms of their visas; the company had neither compensated the workers properly nor paid applicable taxes.

New York Attorney General (AG) Eric T. Schneiderman announced that the IT giant had agreed to pay this amount. In press release, the AG said, “We will not permit companies to violate our laws in order to undercut New York workers. My office is committed to ensuring that our state`s labor marketplace is fair, competitive and transparent for all.”

The company issued a statement denying all allegations leveled against it.
