Nagarjuna wants to prepare the audience for what is in store in Rajanna. Which is why he has briefed the media about his forthcoming film. He said that his character makes a foray only after the first 30 minutes. (But when he makes an entry, mind it, it is a swashbuckling one).

The movie starts with Mallemma, a pre-teen girl, who is the daughter of the deceased Rajanna. Her mother dies when she is still a kid, and she is adopted by the village. None but a grandpa knows her true identity. He maintains her identity as a secret because the Razakars will kill her if they come to know who she is.

The dorasani hates her singing as her daughter doesn’t know how to sing. When she is abducted and tormented, the girl stages an escape. On her way out of the town with her grandpa, she jumps out of the train because she can’t leave the town. When she tells her grandpa that she can't leave the village because Rajanna talks to her everyday, the old man enlightens her about her descent.

The henchman of the dorasani hear him saying this and hound them. When she comes to know that only the Prime Minister can liberate the hundreds of villages under the grip of the evil Razakars, she decides to leave for Delhi to meet Jawaharlal Nehru. He does get the chance to enter a singing competition, which will be attended by Nehru. The rest of the opening scenes (which come before Nag's introduction) are about how the Razakars try to trace the girl and how the heroism of Rajanna is invoked.
