Aadhaar Card can be used while applying for driver’s license, says Centre

The BJP-led Centre made it clear that Aadhaar Card can be used as ‘address proof’ and for ‘date of birth’ proof while applying for driver’s permit/license at RTO’s across the country.

This was intimated by Union Minister for Law & Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad through a written reply in the Rajya Sabha while replying to a member’s query. The Centre has made it mandatory for people to link their respective bank accounts with Aadhaar card numbers and has also been insisting that possession of Aadhaar cards alone would make them ‘qualified’ to get the benefits of various welfare schemes.

Even as a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has urged the Centre not to insist on furnishing Aadhaara card details from people to make them beneficiaries of the Centre and the States’ welfare schemes, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has told the Rajya Sabha this morning that Aadhaar card has been added as ‘address proof’ and for ‘date of birth’ proof while applying for driver’s permit/license at RTOs.

“Necessary rectifications have also been made in laws governing Indian Motor Vehicles Act,” he said and added that in case Aadhar card is not possessed by the applicant, he or she can continue to use passport, birth certificate, community certificate, etc. as proof of birth and residence.
