Famous cricketer gets death threat, assigned bodyguard protection

Thursday, November 19, 2020 • Tamil Comments

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was on the receiving end of criticism after he took part in a Kali puja pandal in Kolkata. Further, a man named Mohsin Talukdar from Talukdarpara area in Bangladesh's Shahpur went live on Facebook and threatened the cricketer, in addition to hurling abuses at him.

The accused later posted another video on Facebook apologizing for his remarks, but the police from the Southeastern Sunamganj district traced and arrested Mohsin from his residence in Ronoshi village on Wednesday at around 11:15 AM. Despite the arrest, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) assigned an armed bodyguard for Shakib. "We have taken the measure as precaution although we see the threats as personal and isolated incidents," Bangladesh Cricket Board CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury reportedly said. After being condemned by Islamic preachers in Bangladesh for attending the ceremony organized by people of a different faith, Shakib Al Hasan issued an apology. "I was on the stage for barely two minutes. People are talking about this and thought I inaugurated it. I did not do this and being a conscious Muslim I would not do this. But, maybe, I should not have gone there. I am sorry for this and apologise. As a practising Muslim, I always try to follow religious customs. Please forgive me if I have done anything wrong," the cricketer stated.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan had assured that strong action would be taken against the man who had issued death threats to Shakib. "I have inquired about the matter. We have decided to take strong action against such criminal acts committed by the person. Threatening cricketer Shakib Al Hasan or anyone is not a part of our culture and we are committed to keep our country safe from such forces," he had said.
