Our legendary icon Amitabh Bachchan has taken on a new, inspiring responsibility.

The Bollywood star reported to have adopted Gayatri Devi, a 90-year-old freedom fighter. This initiative was taken by Big B at the IBN18 Network's Citizen Journalist Awards event that was held recently in Delhi.

Gayatri Devi, who had been active freedom fighter, was said to be fighting for her pension for the past four years. Since 1997, she was living on the ‘Samman’ pension scheme for freedom which was issued by Bihar government; when suddenly the income stopped coming. Gayatri Devi had even taken dharna on the streets of the capital, fighting to restore her freedom fighter's pension.

So much moved by her situation, Bachchan made up his mind to take care of her monetary needs. The veteran actor penned in his blog, “I am moved by their plight. Particularly that of the 90-year-old lady and have announced that I shall take care of her pension for the next five years. She blesses me.”

“She has only that element of humanity left in her. She can barely walk. And she is old. And all she wants is her due - her pension - Rs.3, 500 per month from the government," he further wrote.

Amitabh Bachchan had graced the award ceremony to felicitated 14 Citizen Journalists for their outstanding reporting. The megastar stated that he is still haunted by the function, where he came across several courageous stories from the awardees. “The conviction and strength of those who have dared to fight for their right, for justice, for level playing ground. These men and women have dared to expose those who sit in power or position... They who have all risen from meagre means and become the voice of an entire nation,” stated Big B.
