Centre to make it mandatory for Babus to serve in military

In a significant decision, it appears that the BJP-led Centre might make it mandatory for Babus (State and Central Govt. employees) to work in defence sector at least for a period of five years.

The Ministry of Defence is said to have sent a draft proposal in this regard to the Department of Personnel & Training to ‘adjust’ the shortage of manpower in all the three services: army, navy and the air-force.

Army faces a shortage of 7,679 personnel while the Navy and the Air-Force are facing shortage of 1,434 and 146 personnel respectively. The shortage is only likely to increase in the coming years with the retirement of personnel. Defence Ministry thus feels to take on rent personnel from State and Central Governments as this would also help in bringing them out of their respective ‘comfort zones’.

Central and State Govt. employees would be chosen on a 70%:30% basis. The DOPT is yet to take a decision on the plea of the Defence Ministry but it appears that it would give its consent sooner than later.
