Coast Guard chopper crash-lands at Kochi airport

Following an accident involving a Coast Guard chopper on Sunday, the runway at the Nedumbassery airport was closed for two hours before being reopened. The accident occurred when the Coast Guard's Advanced Light Helicopter 'Dhruv', piloted by Coast Guard Deputy Commandant Vipin and accompanied by Commandant Kunal and technical staff Sunil Totla, crash-landed from a height of 150 feet during a training flight. The chopper fell 5m from the main runway and skidded off the runway. Only Sunil sustained minor injuries and was given emergency medical treatment before being shifted to a hospital.

Flight services were suspended for two hours and four flights was diverted to Thiruvananthapuram and Coimbatore airports. The Coast Guard has announced an inquiry into the accident and said in its preliminary report that the accident was caused by faults in the cyclic controls regulating the chopper's movements. After the helicopter was moved from the accident site and safety checks were completed, flight services resumed.
