Congress urges opposition parties to stand united to defeat the BJP in 2019

Congress Party has issued an emotional appeal to all national-level opposition parties as well as the opposition parties in all States/UTs to come together as a ‘united front’ to inflict a humiliating defeat on the BJP during next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

Rahul Gandhi took over as Congress president from his mother, who had held the post of party president for 19 long years, in December last year. The 84th plenary session of the party being held in New Delhi is the first major meeting held under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. The 3-day conference is being attended among others by Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mallikarjuna Kharge, leaders of Congress Party in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha (respectively) and chief-ministers of Congress-ruled States in the country.

The usual practice is only to involve senior leaders and office-bearers and members of the party’s Working Committee but Rahul has changed the ‘format’ of the session by involving 15,000 party cadres as he sends across a strong message that cadres are equally (if not more) important. Moreover, cadres also get to air/voice their opinion on how to take the party forward in the months to come ahead of next year’s LS polls.

Inaugurating the session after hoisting the party flag, Rahul said “The country is in a way tired, looking for direction and I can say with conviction that only Congress can show the way for the country,” and urged party cadres to spread love among the people as an alternative to BJP’s campaign of hatred.  The session is to discuss the political scenario, economic situation, external affairs with other countries, etc.

Rahul also urged all opposition parties – national and regional – to come together with a single-point agenda of unseating the BJP from the Centre.
