In a big spike, India logged 57,117 positive cases in the last 24 hours (from Friday morning to Saturday morning), bringing the cumulative tally of confirmed cases so far to 17 lakh. Since the pandemic began, this is the biggest single-day spike.

An encouraging sign is that India has got a good rate of non-active cases. At 64.53%, the number of Cured/Discharged/Migrated cases stands at 1,094,374.

With active cases standing at 33.32% (565,101), death rate is at 2.15% (36,511).

India's 7-day moving average, as calculated by Prof. Shamika Ravi, is here:

Daily new cases = about 50,000
Daily recovered = about 34,500
Daily active= about 15,000
Daily deaths= about 500

Low death rate is a piece of great news:

India's COVID-related death rate is low. As per Prof. Samika Ravi's estimate, "If India had the same death rate as, say the United Kingdom, there would be more than 900,000 COVID deaths in India right now."

But is it not that India is said to be under-reporting deaths? "Under-reporting cannot explain this massive difference. Safe to say India doing better," she tweets.
