A Delhi University student has been arrested for creating multiple social media accounts of his former girlfriend's sister and posting personal information about her in the account.

According to a report by a news agency, the man had uploaded the girl's picture as well as her contact number using fake social media accounts opened on Facebook and Instagram in the 21-year-old girl's name. People apparently started contacting the girl soon after, seeking sexual favours, among other things. The girl immediately registered a complaint with the local police regarding the same. The police traced the man using his IP address and found that it was the victim's sister's former boyfriend who was behind the fake profiles. "We used technical surveillance on the phone numbers used to open these fake accounts and that helped us zero in on the suspect, Umesh Kumar, who lives in Sangam Vihar," the Deputy commissioner of police reportedly stated. Umesh was subsequently arrested from his residence on Wednesday.

Following investigation, the police suspect that Umesh had committed the crime in order to get his revenge from the victim. The girl's sister was in a relationship with Umesh, but broke it off in March 2020. The victim was apparently responsible for the break-up, hence Umesh had misused her private information. An offence has reportedly been registered against the suspect for stalking, insulting the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation.
