Yesterday around 8 pm, a team of officers from the Salem Railway police had entered into the Irugur DMK office and arrested DMK functioning committee member R Chandran as he was alleged to have indulged in harassing a woman. Chandran has a 15 years experience in politics.
Chandran belongs to Irugur, and had been the Irugur Town Panchayat head for more than 15 years. The Salem Railway police had entered into the DMK office in Irugur after a meeting was held there, and arrested him as a woman had filed a complaint against him, accusing him of sexual misconduct and harassment.
On March 8, Chandran had been returning to Coimbatore from Chennai after attending DMK candidate interview, and during the journey, misbehaved with a woman who traveled in the same compartment. The terrified woman pulled the emergency chain, and though Chandran and his friends were released after initial warning and an apology letter issued by him, due to a separate harassment case filed by the woman, he has been arrested now. This has been seen as a setback during the election campaign of DMK.
