Farm reforms will result in inflation, worsen farm crisis: KTR

KT Rama Rao on Tuesday criticized the farm bills against which the rich farmers of Punjab have called for Bharat Bandh today. In a series of tweets, KTR wrote that the three agricultural laws recently passed by Parliament are against the interests of the farmers of India. The TRS is one of the 16 political parties supporting the rich farmers' agitation.

"The reforms are in no way beneficial to the farmers, indeed they aggravate farm crisis. That is why the TRS party is opposing these laws," he observed. KTR, whose party recently received a slap from voters in the GHMC polls, alleged that the new law does not include the idea of MSP. "If the Center does not announce support prices, there is a possibility that private syndicates and cartels may cheat farmers by quoting low prices," he alleged.

Saying that 85% of India's farmers are small and marginal and therefore not in a position to go to other states and sell, KTR added that local farmers will suffer if there is a high price in one state and if farmers from other states compete.

He also wrote against Contract Farming. In a subsequent tweet, the IT Minister said, "The stock limit under the Essentials Commodities Act was set up to prevent the black market. It has been amended in the new Laws. With this, there is a risk that traders create artificial shortages and inflate prices. This is detrimental to both farmers and consumers."
