‘Fukri’ is obviously meant for the festive season with its family drama theme and intrusive comedy. Almost all the scenes have been infused with comic elements, sometimes very much farcical that the movie almost takes on a festive air. A plot that does not thrill with its novelty or good intentions, what makes ‘Fukri’ a watchable movie is the mash up of humour, confusions, melodrama and sentiments.
This Siddique movie is a kind of Dileep movie with its exaggerations and over the top comic situations. The plot is as old as Malayalam cinema itself – of warring families due to inter religious love issues and a person from outside entering the scene to solve the issues. Here we have Lukman aka Lucky (Jayasurya) a college dropout, doing small time fraud jobs to eke out a living, asked to pose as someone else to solve a family issue. He is being brought to the scene by Nafsi (Prayaga Martin) to sort out a college misdeed. This encounter leads to other situations and Nafsi’s cousin Aliya (Anu Sithara) brings him into the Fukri household.
Lucky and his gang cracks the scenes with their ribaldry and rejoinders. Though excessive at times, the mood is set with their constant interludes. The Fukri family is introduced as a being of royal background and the movie looks glamorous with its royal setting. The Fukri conflict is the usual inter religious marriage and estrangement within the family. Though ‘Fukri’ starts ut slowly, it picks up speed as scenes roll by. Of course its typical and predictable, but offers a passably entertaining fare.
Jayasurya has given a solid performance and it is his comic timings and act that have us in splits. Prayaga Martin and Anu Sithara have used their screen time well and looks good in this different role. John Kaipallil who played Oebid looks promising. The friends gang with Bhagath Manuel, Nirmal Palazhy and others have lent good support. Director Siddique has a lot of good comic family dramas to his credit, and this one joins the list at maybe a middle position, as an average entertainer. Gopi Sunder’s music and camera frames are commendable.
‘Fukri’ is a colourful entertainer. Though it has nothing fresh to offer perspective viewers, the movie does well to sustain a festive mood with its wacky humour and all-is-well outcome.
