Makers on why Mercury is a must-watch

'Mercury', the silent thriller, released last Friday.  This Karthik Subbaraj-Prabhu Deva movie will hit the cinemas in Tamil Nadu tomorrow.  Here are the five reasons why the makers say it's a must-watch.

1.  Karthik Subbaraj – From the horror heist, Pizza to the silent thriller, Mercury, Karthik has come a long way. The young director shot to fame through short films and the classical Tamil musical Jigarthanda. His next was Iraivi that spoke of the plight of women through the eyes of men. Known for his different take on cinema and revolutionizing the face of the Tamil Industry, Mercury was one of the most challenging projects for Karthik. Narrating a story with absolutely no dialogues is no mean feat and the director we must say has excelled! He is all set to direct Rajnikanth’s next film

2. Prabhudeva – Prabhudeva is the finest dancers/ choreographers of the country today. Whether it was Muqabla or Kay Sera Sera, Prabudeva has made the entire nation dance to his tunes. Mercury is undoubtedly one of his finest performances as an actor. From attending silent workshops with the cast to working on his nuances, he has truly gone the extra mile to perform the character of the antagonist. His gore like bloody face to his movements across the defunct factory, Prabhudeva makes mercury a must watch for all cine goers!

3. Tirru – National Award winning cinematographer Tirru is the cinematic genius behind Mercury. Adopting an international style to his method, Mercury is definitely a cinematic experience par excellence. Whether it was shooting behind an actual sheet of fog, or the green tinge that prevails in the defunct factory, S. Tirru has done a marvelous job and the movie is proof!

4. Santhosh Narayanan and Kunal Ranjan – Santosh Narayan and Karthik have been inseparable since their debut film Pizza.  The film’s music has been composed by Santhosh Narayanan, who is teaming up with Karthik for the fourth consecutive time. They have produced some memorable albums like ‘Jigarthanda’ and ‘Iraivi. The sound has been designed by the renowned Kunal Ranjan, the face behind movies like Ghajini, Race to Witch Mountain and  Fantastic 4 amongst others. A challenge but a fruitful one, the sound and the music have played an extremely important role in the movie especially when there are no dialogues involved. While the prep work for the movie started 5 months in advance, Santhosh and Kunal had to work closely with the director to get the score right. Menacing and thumping, the sound and music both surely gives you the creeps!

5. Satish Kumar and Anbarie - The art design was taken care of by Satish and Anbari. If the music and cinematography have played such an important role, how can we leave behind the artistic depiction of every scene. Shot in Pondicherry, the entire factory has been created from scratch. Since the film was shot in a confined space, the stunts had to be designed accordingly. Prabhudeva’s dancing prowess definitely came in handy here for he has totally enthralled us in the action sequences!

Also starring Sananth Reddy, Deepak Parmesh, Shashank Puroshotham, Anish Padmanabhan, Indhuja Ravichandran, Gajaraj SP and Ramya Nambeesan, Mercury is currently playing in cinemas now.
