Direction:
Venki

Vakada Anjan Kumar

There are two ways of looking at the film MPOD. You can blindly appreciate whatever the director has dished out in the name of experimentation. On the other hand, you can obviously criticize the loopholes in such a daring attempt.

Both the approaches will not be right. For, there are a lot of good things in the film, and the failings too are there.

The film will surely get distinction for novelty, and just about pass mark for execution.

With just three characters in the film, the story, can be guessed, is about inter-personal relationships and what happens in a particular period of time.

Here director Venky has chosen the goings-on between a husband and wife (Raja and Shriya) on their first night. Adding the mirth aspect is a thief (Brahmanandam) who had entered the room unbeknownest that it was the night of consummation for a newly wedded couple. Laced into the comedy caper is the tender idea that love and marital relationship is all about heart and less about carnal desires.

Raja and Shriya as the hubby-wife duo are in one word splendid. Their on-screen chemistry carries the film for most part. Shriya looks ravishing in song sequences and Raja's expressions carry comfort and authority.

Brahmanandam just romps through with conviction in a good role for him.

Kabuli's music is good and gives the film a good aural backdrop.

Director Venky's intentions are indeed exemplary. He also shows a good flair for understated humor --- the kind that is evolved and cerebral.

It takes lot of conviction to attempt such a thing. But he has slipped a bit when it comes to the script. For such a film, script is the oxygen. Unfortunately, the supply is uneven.

Yet, MPOD is an important film --- it shows that there are directors and writers who are ready to think beyond the five song-five fight-heavy dialogues-if-possible-some-story format.
