Naidu slams Jatiley for lack of funds; says BJP failed to keep up promises

Andhra Pradesh chief-minister Chandrababu Naidu has slammed Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for the latter’s reported statement that ‘funds to the State (A.P.) could not be increased merely for the sake of sentimental issues’.

Naidu, who has formally split from the BJP-led NDA at the Centre a few days back, hasn’t been with the best of terms with the BJP which he claims didn’t pay any heed to Andhra Pradesh’s request for according ‘special status’ to it.  Two Union Ministers, who are TDP MPs, have quit the Union Cabinet following Naidu’s decision to distance himself and his party from the BJP.

Commenting on TDP’s decision to quit the NDA as well, Jaitley reportedly said that funds (allocated in Union fiscal budget) can’t be increased merely based on sentimental reasons of the people of Andhra Pradesh.

Taking Jaitley on, Naidu said that it was wrong on the part of Jaitley to say that people’s sentiments can’t be taken seriously, “After all, wasn’t Telengana carved out of Andhra Pradesh bowing to people’s requests and sentiments?” he asked.  “People’s sentiments are always strong; one would neglect them at his own peril,” he added.

“Jaitley’s statement on allocation of funds was an irresponsible one,” Naidu said and concluded by stating that the BJP never bothered to fulfill its poll promises given aplenty prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
