New idioms
Monday, July 24, 2006 • Tamil Comments

Imman is one of the up and coming music composers and is known for his peppy songs. However in Nenjil Jil Jil, he has come up with a mix of racy and soft melodies.

Imman has tried new idioms in music making. It remains to be seen whether they work with the audience or not.

The movie being directed by Selvah features Navdeep and Aparna in lead roles.

Chattu Puttu (Rahul Nambiar)

Imman is off the blocks with high energy. Though the instrumentation reminds one of his earlier songs, the fresh voice of Rahul Nambiar makes the difference. There is a raw energy to the song that makes it worth a listen.

Punnagayae (Ranjith)

A soft romantic number inspired by western beats. Making good use of the guitar, Imman strikes an impact. Ranjith's soft voice, combined with a brisk chorus are the special highlights. The whole feel is un-Imman like, if you will.

Unnakagathaney (Unni Krishnan, Sujatha Menon)

Unni Krishnan and Sujatha Menon, two of the talented singers in tandem. So it has to be a soft, lilting number. And it is. Dipped in melody, the two sing with rare gusto. The feel is soothing on the nerves. Imman, who hitherto is popular for racy numbers has given a melody fusion of classical and western music. The pick of the album with soft beats. An alapana interlude is appealing.

Kannukul Kalavaram (Kay Kay)

A bit number in the album. Kay Kay renders this brief romantic song, which has soothing guitar strum accompanying the lyrics.

Kathal Thana (Kay Kay, Chitra)

This brisk song reminds one of Ilayaraja's works in late 1980s. The harmony is striking and syncopated.  Imman has managed to maintain a good momentum all through with Chitra giving the song the right pep. The 'samba' inspired sounds in between is also catchy.

Nenjil Jil Jil (Imman)

The song starts with some enigmatic instrumentation ---- almost Middle East kind of rhythms. A high-throated singing by Imman combined with racy rhythms make it click.
