Mollywood's newly found interest in sequels seems to be in the belief that they are a shortcut to victory, a winning formula to triumph over troubled times. But in some cases it can also be due to a bankruptcy of ideas. The latest sequel in town 'Ninnishtam Ennishtam 2' is one such pathetic affair which doesn't connect with the spectators of today.
The movie set in and around Sree Padmanabha temple has that very regular, age old story lines with hardly any new recipes. Much of the characters from the original including Jagathy Sreekumar(the palmist) and Sukumary( fortune teller) are there with their regular jobs. The movie has Suresh Kumar, actress Ambika's brother ( who did an impressive cameo in Laljose's 'Neelathamara')as Sreekumar, who bumps into a girl many times and ultimately fall in love with her. This girl happens to be the daughter of Priya(the lead of the original) who is a famous singer by now and Suresh Kumar is the nephew of the character played by Mohan Lal in the original Priyan movie. As the lead love pair is set, there must be a mandatory villain to flesh up the proceedings to the climax. The movie by Aleppey Asharaf is so outdated and cliched that as it moves on, even the least of the moviegoers can predict it's plot points.
It is the need of the hour to go on for a serious research to find out what makes filmmakers and men with moneybags to proceed to make films with such inane plot lines. Except for a few songs by Dr C V Renjith that are good only to be heard, there is not a single redeeming factor about the movie. The screenplay is faulty and devoid of any exhilarating moments. Anandakuttan's camerawork and Bhoominathan's editing also matches the poor quality of the movie. The better shots in the movie, in fact are those parts of the original shown aplenty in the film. Even those old great songs like 'Ilam Manjin Kulirumayoru Kuyil' and 'Thumbapoo Kaatil' are poorly choreographed and appear as a real torture on screen.
The final word: As 'Ennishtam Ninnishtam 2' is poor in content and is released with least publicity, the Box Office prospects appear dim. Apart from wasting your time on this, better rent the original and have a leisurely watch at home. Or else, encourage your worst enemies to watch this one, so that they may never ever come before you.
