A one-year-old child managed to survive a fall from the fourth floor of his home in Mumbai, on being held by a tree branch, which later rolled him off to the ground. Being caught by the tree reduced the impact of the fall, which could’ve otherwise been fatal.

The incident happened at around 9 AM in the morning on Thursday at a building in the Govandi region of Mumbai. The one-year-old Atharva Barkade had been playing in the living room before he leaped out the safety grill bare window, which was left unlatched by the grandmother of the child, who had opened it to retrieve clothes left out for drying. The father of the baby, who had just entered the living room, alerted his family members who rushed to the scene and found, to their intense surprise and pleasure, Atharva crying and trying to lift himself up on the ground floor.

However, the child has been severely injured and is currently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the Fortis Hospital in Mulund. “The child is in the ICU. While his condition has improved from the time he was admitted with us, he's suffered injuries to the liver which will need intensive treatment, including transfusion of blood products,” one of the doctors said in a statement.
