Ganesh (name changed) works with a reputed organization, and earns a pay package of close to 1.5 lakhs per month. With a happy, small family comprising his wife Lakshmi( name changed) and a kindergarten going child, and financially stable status, life was running very smooth for Ganesh, until the entry of an uninvited guest. Ganesh turned a very different personality, and was always glued to his mobile. While his wife initially thought he was busy chatting with friends on Whatsapp and browsing through Facebook, she could find the reason behind his mobile addiction only after a damage was inflicted.Having access to the bank accounts of Ganesh, Lakshmi noticed that huge volumes of cash was transferred/ made as payments, and this increased her suspicion on Ganesh. He was seen quite often, talking with a select circle of friends, and after listening to one such conversations, Lakshmi found that he had been betting big on online gambling portals, and had already lost huge money in it.

After secretly accessing Ganesh's mobile, she found that he had debts in the tunes of several lakhs due to the online gambling events he had lost, and was desperate to play further. This revelation ultimately lead to the first major trouble in their marital life, as she threatened to quit the marriage if he continues online gambling, and this made Ganesh stop the habit for a while. However, he restarted it within weeks, much to the annoyance of Lakshmi, and she broke his mobile into pieces. With every phone broken and every penny lost, Ganesh's desperation, obsession and greed to bet big and earn the lost money increased, while on the other end his debts also increased. Ganesh had emptied his bank balance already, and had started borrowing money from his friends for gambling, and now, friends turned foes, with every game lost by him.

Beyond a point, Lakshmi could not bear with the emotional, psychological stress given by this habit of her husband, and the financial crisis he had taken the family into, and started fighting with him regularly. The fights lead to her applying for divorce, and even though there's still an year pending for the formalities to complete legally, Lakshmi and their child are residing in their native, in her parent's home. On the other end, Ganesh's debts have hit crores, with loans taken yet to be repaid, and bank officials behind him to recover debts, and Ganesh still remaining addicted to the game, despite being adviced by friends and enlightened on the harsh reality that he is not playing a real human, but a program.

This, is just a sample of the addiction into online gambling, this generation is into. There are numerous Ganeshs investing not just their hard earned money, time and energy, but their whole life, losing the emotional attachment with family, friends and the whole support system that can help a human being travel the journey of life smoothly. While youngsters and kids are addicted to games like PUBG, the middle aged and earning class men are addicted to such online gambling games and rummy portals, betting huge money (either earned or borrowed) and losing it. In recent times, thanks to the IPL craze and the fanaticism prevalent among the nation's youngsters for the cricket players, several online cricket betting portals and mobile based cricket betting apps have also developed, where people bet big on players, matches, with real money without knowing the impacts, and ultimately lose it big in the end. Irrespective of the money lost and the advise and counselling received, knowledge imparted on how these sites operate by luring, teasing and manipulating with programmed games that initially let the user win, and slowly start robbing the user, in a technologically aided, online version of Pithamagan's fraudster Sakthivel played by Suriya. It's high time the government takes necessary actions to ban such online gambling portals, just like the ban on porn sites, and the society to realize the evil that these online gambling portals are.
