Online youth safety hearings on Wednesday had a distinct feel as families of children damaged or lost online sat behind social media CEOs. In contrast, earlier hearings were much more about talking than acting. Families showing pictures of their children affected had the session for Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel to apologize.

TikTok, Discord, and X CEOs spoke to the families at the hearing. Insincere apologies have not gone down well with the parents. Although information was scarce, it was only by Friday that X and Discord had indicated they would see families.

Joe Benarroch, chief business operations officer at X, said his company would work with the senators to seek a solution. Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, applauded parents attending the hearing and supported the measures.

Spiegel said he met with parents of children hurt on the platform, and this partnership is meant to raise awareness among teens. Clint Smith, a leader in legal, policy, and safety at Discord, said it was important to continue taking responsibility for the users, especially kids.

Both Meta and TikTok refused to sit down with the families. Still, parents have to be a huge part of the ongoing social media safety of kids and teens. The powerful hearing testimonies will drive the legislative actions of the senators. Parents' advocacy is going to bring together work related to security on digital platforms for children.
