Start IPL, make betting legal to boost revenues

There is a proposal from several commentators that the government must think out of the box and do certain things in order to mint moolah. The lockdown has eroded the revenues of the States and the Centre to the tune of thousands of crores.

Now that liquor shops have been re-opened, psephologist Yashwant Deshmukh suggests that the Indian Premier League must be allowed to take place in empty stadiums. He also recommends that making betting legal is the need of the hour. "Put 28% VAT on betting. Also, start home delivery of liquor," he writes.

Says Gappistan Radio, "Sports betting should be legal, and should only be only online, through registered companies... Huge, untapped revenue source. Moral argument is great, but it doesn't do much for the economy."

More than 18 US states have legalized sports betting. Colorado became the 18th one to do so on May 1.
