Following the untimely demise of the senior leader of DMK and former Tamilnadu Chief minister Kalaignar M Karunanidhi in August, the Thiruvarur constituency which was held by him had been vacant for four months, and after considering local festivals, weather situations and the electoral rolls, the Election Commission of India had finally made an announcement on bye-elections for the constituency this week.

On Monday, the Election Commission had announced that it had decided to conduct the Bye-election for Thiruvarur on January 28, and with the date of polling being decided to January 28, the commission had also announced January 10 as the last date for filing nominations for contesting the elections and the counting will happen on January 31.

Ever since the announcement was made, there had been huge confusion over whom the DMK party will field at the constituency for the bye-elections, and in such a situation, it has been learned that fans of Udhayanidhi Stalin, now a popular actor cum producer and son of DMK Chief Stalin, had nominated him for the elections. On the other hand, the followers of Thiruvarur district secretary Poondi Kalaivanan have nominated him for the same. With Thiruvarur being the stronghold of DMK for long, and this being the first Bye-polls after MK Stalin took over as the president of DMK, it is to be seen if Udhayanidhi Stalin gets to contest.
