Flexes its muscles with folk
Saturday, May 10, 2014 • Tamil Comments

After his stupendous 100th movie Biriyani, Yuvan is back with a full-fledged album almost after 6 months. Rajmohan, who directed, Kungapoovum Konjupuravum, has partnered with Yuvan once again and this indeed promised a lot in the offing. Yuvan usually scores heavily in village subjects, and he comes up with some interesting mixes this time too.

1. Kongunattu Thendralukku  Listen here

Singer(s): Karthik Raja & Venkat Prabhu

Folk is one genre where Yuvan never disappoints. Snehan has brought the beauty of, `Kongu Naadu' aka Coimbatore district with his wonderful lyrics. The chorus & groovy orchestration stand out. However, both, Karthik & Venkat could have done bit more justice with their vocals. Nevertheless Yuvan's tried and tested folk tune saves the entire song.

2. Manasu Engae  Listen here

Singer: Maanicka Vinayagam

After a long time, Maanicka Vinayagam is making sure he is one of the best when it comes to rendering rural verses. A very short tune in which Yuvan tries a fusion for a love failure song. Especially the last 40 seconds of the song are a good listen with Mridangam aptly conveying the pain of a broken heart.

3.Thakkalikku Thavaniye  Listen here

Singer: Vijay Yesudas & Renu

When Vijay Yesudas joins with Yuvan, all we get to hear is nothing less than a magic. A wonderful rhythm based on complete folk ensures the song to stay in our playlist for months to come. The tune opens with a captivating, Mouth Organ allowing rest of the instruments to overrule. Snehan's verses "Pathu ooru pasiya pokkum azhagu azhagu.. pakkuvama paaya pottu pazhagu pazhagu" rendered with so much love by lead singers. Easily the best of the album.

4. Tharamela Irunthena  Listen here

Singer: Yuvan Shankar Raja

A very functional, Yuvan's own generic tune, which offers nothing new in terms of rhythm, orchestration, and usage of instruments. Had Yuvan not rendered his voice for this number, this could have sounded bit different. Nevertheless, a decent listen, if we don't remember the composers yesteryear works.

5.Vaangamma Vaangappa  Listen here

Singer(s): Ranjith, Sathyan & Priya Himesh.

An unusual threadbare stuff from Yuvan. Barring the one minute prelude before second stanza nothing works in this tune. A very functional lyrics based on everyday conversation does not add any value too. A passable number.

6.Vidudaa ponnungale venaam  Listen here

Singer: Mukesh

A techno folk offers lot of scope for, Mukesh, to improvise. Mukesh sneaks in with his free spirited voice to add one more to the tally of, love failure kuthu number with the lyrics pointed towards girls which could become a seasonable hit.

Pick(s) of the album - Thakkalikku Thaavaniye, Manasu Ingae, and  Tharamela Irunthena.
