Vilaapangal... - T V Chandran with another sensitive plot
IndiaGlitz  [Tuesday, February 26, 2008]

T V Chandran is known to be the true master in creating art house cinemas, whose brilliance in narratives have no parallels in the genre. Opening a new phase of Malayalam cinema, T. V Chandran attempted to say every story in a different way that of course was very novel to Malayalam audience. Thus, in a short while with a handful of movies, he became the most acclaimed director who has a very big fan following, even from the lovers of mainstream cinema. He has been pretty successful with his previous ventures like Ponthan Maada, Danny, Ormakal Undayirikkanam, Susannah and Paadam Onnu Oru Vilaapam which were all appreciated for their power of content and difference in narratives. His new film Vilaapangalkkappauram presently under production also deals with a very sensitive and rare issue, as is usual with his movies which are told with a heavy dose of dry satire.

Vilaapangalkkappauram is also a female oriented story like his earlier Mankamma and Susanna. Here the lead character is a young girl named Sahira, who is forced to flee from Gujarat following the communal riots that hit the state years ago. She somehow reaches Kerala in an extremely pathetic   condition, and is taken for treatment in a hospital,   under the supervision of Dr. Mercy Verghese and Dr. Gopinath.

As the world around realizes her arrival as a consequence of Gujarat riots, Sahira   very soon becomes a regular material in news.  Within a short time people from all walks of life, including politicians and religious leaders comes forward with interest in her issue. But most were around to make a name or benefit for themselves as she becomes a potential celebrity in the offering. Apart from Dr. Mercy and Dr. Gopinath, nobody did understand her real predicament and her mental agony. These, two doctors, even though under thick pressures, succeed in bringing her back to normalcy but they even has got  nothing to offer  for the share of  mental problems, relating to the aftermath of the riots that   haunted and traumatized  her, daily.

Aryaadan Shaukath, who had earlier scripted and produced a meaningful movie Paadam Onnu Oru Vilaapam is back with T V Chandran, once again scripting for this new film.   ‘Veyyil’ fame Priyanka appears for the first time in a demanding role (in Malayalam) as Sahira. Suhasini makes a comeback to Malayalam as Dr. Mercy while Biju Menon appears as Dr. Gopinath.  The film which was shot mostly at Wayanad and Kozhikkodu has canned its few scenes in actual riot affected locales at Ahmadabad. M J Radhakrishnan cranks the camera while Beena Paul does the editing. The film has a song by M Jayachandran, set in the lyrics of M Jayachandran. Produced in the banner of Clear Images, the film has just completed its post production and is waiting its release.
