'Engeyum Kadhal' is a breezy romance written and directed by Prabhu Deva. It is produced by Kalpathi S. Agoram.
It stars 'Jayam' Ravi and Hansika Motwani. The film started with the title 'Ich' but was finally changed to 'Engeyum Kadhal'.
Music of the film is by Harris Jayaraj. The songs were composed as early as the Christmas season in 2009. Prabhu Deva and Harris Jayaraj had gone to Sydney, Australia for the compositions.
The soundtrack was launched on November 8 exactly ten years after Harris Jayaraj's first album 'Minnale' arrived.
'Engeyum Kadhal' has seven songs tuned by Harris Jayaraj and there's no Bombay Jayashree in it. Otherwise it is a regular Harris magical.
1. Engeyum Kadhal
Singers: Aalaap Raju Devan, Ranina Reddy
The title song is a fabulous beginning to the album. Though reminds of 'June Ponaal....the pure romantic elements in Harris' musical nuances and Thamarai's fine words cuddle you and don't leave you till the end. Close your eyes and listen to this song, it is a dream you doesn't want to end.
Simple leisurely rhythms and arrangements held by guitars and drum kit makes this an important song. An intangible romantic feeling is created by Aalaap Raju's lovely vocals and the additional vocals by Devan, Ranina Reddy elevates the song to a blue rock ballad. Must hear Pick of the Pack.
2. Thee Illai...
Singers: Naresh Iyer, Mahathi, Gopal Rao, Ranina Reddy
"Theeyillai" is a swiftly made situational number. Harris has made the male and female singers shift to different scales on and off that is interesting. The interlude choruses are Harris specialties. Naresh Iyer and Mahathi have done a great job.
A slow romantic duet but should not stay back with the premium classes only.
Singers: Richard, Rahul Nambiar, Naveen Madava
Richard screams with Harris turning to Michael Jackson for inspiration. A peppy hip-hop rock, filled with tricks but is certainly catchy. Loaded western beats with a sudden kuthu rap bits in between is a new genre. 80 years old Vaali is very young and you can see that in this song.
Singers: Karthik, Prashanthini
Harris assembles good metallic tones for this song. Karthik's dependable and Prashanthini's respectable vocals hold this song in esteem. No great interpretations tried and that's not different also. Thamarai's lyric is the magnetism of this regular Harris number.
5. Bathing at Cannes...
Singers: Emcee Jesz, Kash n' Krissy, Raninia Reddy
Lyrics: Emcee Jesz, Kash
A short techno-rap that must have been kept in the film for a purpose best known to the film's director Prabhu Deva. Kash n' Krissy is noticed better as they have become very popular with 'Irumbile Oru Irudhayam' song from Endhiran.
6. Nenjil Nenjil
Singers: Harish Raghavendra, Chinmayi
Lyrics: Madan Karky
"Nenjil Nenjil" sounds a return to good old serious romantic numbers with a classical touch. Simmering drums and classy flute at the back gives you the 80s great feelings. Chinmayi has done what Bombay Jayashree does to Harris songs usually. Madan Karky who electrified with his sci-fi love thoughts is very rooted to reality in this.
A wonderful tune with words immersed in love, Harish Raghavendra and Chinmayi's swaying vocals are picks of this great number.
7. Dhimu Dhimu...
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
In "Dhimu Dhimu", Harris' guitars invite you into the song right at the outset. It later rides on the shoulders of Karthik. Na. Muthukumar's lyric as usual is romantic and persuading. A slight tint of 'Nenjukkul Peithidum Mamalzhai' is seen but that doesn't stop you from liking this song.
Overall, 'Engeyum Kadhal' is one of the best albums of this year. All the songs bear Harris' stamp and Engeyum Kadhal and Nenjil Nenjil stand out to be real melodies. Harris has done his job perfectly and waiting to see how romantic Prabhu Deva has presented the songs on celluloid.
