Aarumugam - Old wine in old bottle
IndiaGlitz  [Saturday, September 26, 2009]

Director Suresh Krishna has opted to go a safe path. With Bharath by his side, the filmmaker has gone ahead to render 'Aarumugam', which is almost a remake of his yesteryear Rajini hit 'Annamalai'.

Suresh Krishna has loaded the movie with punch dialogues, pulsating stunt sequences and a comedy track with Karunaas and laced it with Priyamani appearing in skimpy costumes.

It is supposedly a formula from a Rajini film but with Bharath donning the lead role. As a result, a sense of deja vu prevails all through, which seemingly plays spolisport.

Ramya Krishnan, who played the dreaded Neelambari opposite Rajinikanth in 'Padayappa', has tried to repeat the act. She oozes wilderness in her eyes and repeats the magic well. Unfortunately a predictable storyline takes away the sheen.

Bharath does render justice to the role. He sings, romances and flies in fights. Hitherto known for soft portrayals and off-beat roles, Bharath seems to be getting ready for mass themes ever since he joined hands with Perarasu for 'Pazhani'.

Priyamani has no big role other than appearing in songs and disappearing later. The rest of the cast includes Sathya, Seetha, Karunaas among others.

Aarumugam (Bharath) is a poor idli vendor on the streets. His close friend Karthik (Sathya) hails from a rich family and his sister Malini Devi (Ramya Krishnan) is a business tycoon.

The former owns a piece of land in city where his mother’s (Seetha) grave is built. Malini Devi plays all dirty tricks to separate her brother's friendship with Aarumugam and keeps her hand on the grave. Besides, Aarumugam's sister is also gets molested.

Now it is the turn of Aarumugam to take revenge on her. Aarumugam vows to become rich and settle score with Malini Devi. In the meantime, we also have Yamini (Priyamani), who falls in love with Aarumugam.

Deva, who is known for racy tunes, has just done that here. A couple of numbers are really peppy. Suresh Krishna seems to have focussed on making the screenplay racy losing out on the story. The power and charm that was in ‘Annamalai’ was sadly missing in ‘Aarumugam’.
