Sudheer Babu Interview

In a tete-e-tete with indiaglitz, Sudheer Babu opens about his kids, bonding with Mahesh Babu, forthcoming release Mosagallaku Mosagadu and impending biopic on Pullela Gopichand.

You have not had a release for one and a half year. What was going through your mind?

After my debut film (SMS), I took a year gap for my second one, and again there`s a gap for my third release. Yes, I`m going a bit slow but that`s not intentional, it`s just that no script has excited me to sign. Although there`s a delay, I`m confident that my new film will impress the audience.

Three years after your debut (2012), you had just 3 releases. Don`t you think you are going slow?

It`s not about release but it`s about how you grow as an actor. I have grown and improved considerably from my first film. For me, the process of growth is not about how much the film grossed but what are the box office numbers in the first week, which depends on the hero capacity. If you look at my first week box office numbers; I`m doing better than heroes who had 5-6 releases.

What did you learn as an actor over a period of time?

It`s difficult to measure the growth of an actor. Learning is nothing but the small observations and adjustments you make, and in the process, you don`t realize that you are actually growing. But the only thing that can be gauged is success. If you are getting success it means people are accepting you and that`s growth.

Do you and Mahesh share scripts, being in the same field

Yeah…I talk to Mahesh about every film I do and even take his inputs regarding the script, crew, etc. I also take Mavayyagaru`s (Krishna) inputs as well but eventually, I`ll take the final call on the project. Sometimes it backfires but the beauty is that you grow as an individual and learn from your mistakes. Apart from films, me and Mahesh also discuss several other things like fitness.

Your`s is not a cowboy film. So how do you justify the title?

We have chosen the title Mosagallaku Mosagadu purely based on hero`s characterization, and not because of Krishna`s film did well. We believe this title is apt for the film and you`ll come to know after seeing the film. Even though the film is not of a cow-boy genre, we all zeroed in on the title based on the script.

Do you take your kids to the sets?

Yeah…my son (Charith Maanas) is making his acting debut in this film. Even I`m excited that this is his first film and I think he has done a fabulous job. People are saying that he`s going to be a rock star tomorrow and I`m very happy to listen to the feedback about him. I want this film to do well because this is my son`s first film too. He will be seen as young Sudheer.

Who inspired your son to get into films?

I did not ask him to do but that was his thought. He keeps telling me that I want to do this…I want to do that. Sometimes he puts a song from one of Mahesh Babu`s films and plays it the whole day and keeps emulating him. So looking at his interest, when there was an opportunity, I thought let`s give it a short.

Does your kid know that you are a hero and Mahesh is a superstar?

Yeah yea…my kid knows that Mahesh is a superstar and he keeps asking me when my film release (smiles) is.

How do you chill out with your kids?

After getting into showbiz, it`s become a little difficult for me to spend time with them. But I make it a point to be with them on Sunday; it`s like family time for me. I make sure that I`m at home and teach them some stuff I know. They are very excited to see my stunts and action episodes, especially the elder one – he can do pretty much what all I can do right now (smiles). So I`m like inspiring them to do a lot of stuff. But if I need to spend time with them, I need to have a lot of energy. I need more energy to entertain them than I need to work out at a gym (laughs) but I love that time being with them.

You took any professional training for fights

I`ve learnt a few bike stunts but we did not put them in Mosagallaku Mosagadu. But there are some action sequences which I have done without rope (like for all my films) and they have come out well. They look stylish and I`m confident people will love them, especially after they come to know that I did those scenes without rope.

What do you think works in favor of Mosagallaku Mosagadu

There are a lot of factors which I think will work for the film. The story backdrop – it starts from North and comes to South and interesting characters that rally around the protagonist.

You are a badminton player. Is that the reason you are doing a film on Pullela Gopichand`s biopic

That`s just one of the reasons why I`m doing a Pullella Gopichand`s biopic. The main reason is that I`ve been inspired with Gopi`s life. I`ve seen him from close quarters and I want people to know the hard work he did and the compromises his family made. I want people to get inspired, pick up some sport and become something in life and that`s the reason I took up the project.
